Galaxy Digital, a major player in the Bitcoin mining sector, has unveiled plans to potentially convert its Helios mining facility in West Texas into a high-performance computing center, marking a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence operations.

The announcement came as part of the company’s third-quarter earnings report released on November 7, 2024.

The company has entered into a preliminary agreement with an unnamed U.S. hyperscaler to transform its 800-megawatt Helios facility.

Currently, the facility operates at 200 megawatts capacity, but Galaxy is exploring the possibility of securing an additional 1.7 gigawatts of power capacity for the site.

The move comes at a time when Bitcoin mining operations face increasing challenges. Galaxy Digital’s third-quarter results showed a 27% decrease in Bitcoin production, with only 176 BTC mined during the period. This decline occurred despite an 11% increase in the company’s hashrate to 6.2 exahashes per second.

Mining revenue also took a hit, dropping 23% to $18.5 million in the third quarter. The company attributed these decreases to multiple factors, including the Bitcoin halving event in April, increased mining difficulty, and seasonal energy use curtailment.

The financial impact of these challenges was reflected in Galaxy’s quarterly results, with the company reporting a net loss of $54 million.

However, this represented an improvement from the previous quarter’s $177 million loss. The company’s operating revenue grew by over 30% quarter-over-quarter, despite industry-wide declines in trading volumes and a drop in Ethereum prices.

Galaxy’s equity capital stood at $2.1 billion as of September 30, and the company recorded a net income of $191 million, which it attributed to strong operations and favorable market conditions for digital assets.

The potential conversion of the Helios facility aligns with a broader industry trend. Other major mining companies, including Riot Platforms and Marathon Digital, are also exploring AI-related expansions.

Core Scientific, another prominent player in the mining sector, has already secured a 12-year partnership with AI-focused hyperscaler CoreWeave, expected to generate over $8 billion.

Industry analysts have predicted positive outcomes for Bitcoin miners who diversify into AI operations. Asset management firm VanEck projects that miners could generate up to $14 billion in annual profits by 2027 if they allocate 20% of their energy resources to AI computations.

The Helios facility’s planned conversion represents a strategic response to these market conditions. The current 200-megawatt operation could be expanded to utilize the full 800-megawatt capacity, with potential for additional growth through the proposed 1.7-gigawatt power capacity expansion.

Galaxy Digital emphasizes that the AI computing conversion plan remains subject to thorough due diligence and necessary approvals. The company has not disclosed specific timeline details for the potential conversion.

The company continues to pursue its reorganization plans to become a Delaware-based corporation listed on the Nasdaq. This transition awaits final SEC review and required approvals.

In terms of operations, Galaxy maintains its mining infrastructure while exploring the AI computing opportunity. The decrease in Bitcoin production during the third quarter highlighted the challenges facing traditional mining operations, including increased competition and rising operational costs.
